Basics

SPF, UVA stars and PA explained

SPF 30 or 50

SPF measures UVB (burning) protection. Dermatologists recommend at least SPF 30; choose 50 for fair or sensitive skin and summer.

UVA stars

In the UK, look for 4 or 5 UVA stars (Boots star rating) for ageing protection.

Broad spectrum

Means the product protects against both UVA and UVB.

02

By skin type

Best SPF for your skin type

Oily or acne-prone

Fluid, gel or matte textures labelled non-comedogenic.

Dry

Creamy, hydrating SPFs with glycerin or ceramides.

Sensitive

Mineral (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) and fragrance-free.

Darker skin tones

Tinted mineral or modern chemical filters that leave no white cast.

Makeup wearers

Primer-like SPFs that sit well under foundation.

How to use

How much SPF to apply

Use about two finger-lengths for face and neck, as the last step of your morning routine. Reapply every two hours outdoors. Makeup with SPF alone isn't enough.

Common questions

Do I need SPF in the UK in winter?

Yes. UVA rays, which age skin, are present all year and pass through clouds and windows.

Is SPF 30 enough for my face?

SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB; it's fine for daily UK use if applied generously.

Mineral or chemical sunscreen?

Both work. Mineral suits sensitive skin; chemical filters often feel lighter.

Can I use body sunscreen on my face?

You can, but face formulas are lighter and less likely to clog pores.
