Labels

Reading a sunscreen label

SPF

Measures protection from UVB, the rays that burn. Choose 30 or higher.

Broad spectrum / UVA

Protects from UVA, which ages skin and passes through windows.

Water resistant

Lasts 40 or 80 minutes in water, then reapply.

PA+ rating

Common in Asia; more plus signs mean more UVA protection.

02

Filters

Mineral or chemical?

Mineral

Zinc oxide or titanium dioxide; gentle for sensitive skin, may leave a cast.

Chemical

Lightweight and invisible; better for daily wear under makeup.

Hybrid

Combines both for comfort and protection.

Best choice

The one you'll wear generously every single day.

03

How much

Apply enough, often enough

Use about two finger-lengths for the face and neck. Apply as the last step of your morning routine and reapply every two hours outdoors, after swimming or sweating.

04

Moisturizers

Choosing a moisturizer

Oily skin

Oil-free gels or gel-creams.

Dry skin

Creams with ceramides, shea or squalane.

Sensitive skin

Fragrance-free, short ingredient lists.

Combination

A light lotion; add a richer cream on dry areas.

05

Tip

Can one product do both?

A moisturizer with SPF works if you apply enough of it, but most people use too little. On dry skin, layering a moisturizer and then a dedicated sunscreen is more reliable.

Common questions

What is the best sunscreen for your face?

A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher that you enjoy wearing daily. Oily skin often prefers gel or fluid textures; dry skin prefers creamy ones; sensitive skin often does well with mineral filters.

How much sunscreen should I use on my face?

About a quarter teaspoon, or two finger-lengths, for face and neck.

Do I need sunscreen indoors or on cloudy days?

UVA passes through clouds and windows, so daily use is the safest habit.

How often should I reapply?

Every two hours outdoors, and after swimming, sweating or towel drying.
