Causes

Why is my scalp so oily?

Genetics and hormones

Some scalps simply produce more sebum, especially during puberty or periods.

Washing too little — or too harshly

Build-up traps oil; stripping shampoos can make the scalp overproduce.

Heavy products

Oils, serums and conditioner at the roots weigh hair down.

Touching your hair

Fingers spread oil from scalp to lengths.

Routine

How to get rid of an oily scalp

1. Wash as often as you need

Daily washing is fine with a gentle shampoo.

2. Clarify weekly

A salicylic acid or clarifying shampoo removes build-up.

3. Condition the ends only

Keep conditioner off the scalp.

4. Rinse with cool water

Hot water stimulates oil.

5. Use dry shampoo sparingly

It absorbs oil but builds up if overused.

Help

When to see a GP

See a GP if oiliness comes with red, itchy, flaky patches — it may be seborrhoeic dermatitis, which responds to medicated shampoos.

Common questions

How often should I wash an oily scalp?

As often as needed — daily is fine with a gentle shampoo.

Does washing less train your scalp to be less oily?

There's little evidence; build-up usually makes it worse.

What is the best shampoo for an oily scalp in the UK?

Look for salicylic acid, tea tree or clarifying formulas at Boots and Superdrug.

Can an oily scalp cause dandruff?

Yes, excess oil feeds the yeast linked to dandruff.
