Know it

Dry scalp vs dandruff

Dry scalp

Small, white, dry flakes; skin feels tight; often worse in winter.

Dandruff

Larger, oily, yellowish flakes linked to yeast on the scalp.

02

Causes

Why scalps get dry

Cold, dry air

Indoor heating pulls moisture from skin.

Harsh shampoos

Strong sulfates strip natural oils.

Hot showers

Very hot water dries the scalp.

Overwashing

Washing daily can be too much for some scalps.

03

Routine

A soothing routine

Wash with a mild, fragrance-free shampoo 2–4 times a week in lukewarm water. Once a week, massage a light scalp oil or a serum with glycerin or hyaluronic acid before washing. Use a humidifier in winter.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if flakes are thick, red, painful or spread beyond the scalp, which can signal psoriasis or eczema. This is general information, not medical advice.

Common questions

How do I know if it is dry scalp or dandruff?

Dry scalp flakes are small and white; dandruff flakes are bigger, oily and often yellowish.

Is oil good for a dry scalp?

A light oil before washing can help dry scalp, but avoid it if you have dandruff, as oil can feed yeast.

How often should I wash a dry scalp?

Usually 2–4 times a week with a mild shampoo and lukewarm water.
