Why it matters
Your scalp is skin
The scalp has more oil glands than almost anywhere on the body. When it is irritated, flaky or clogged, hair can look dull and feel weaker. A few skincare habits keep it balanced.
Routine
A simple scalp care routine (UK)
1. Wash often enough
Oily scalps may need washing daily or every other day; dry scalps every 3–4 days. Massage shampoo into the scalp, not the lengths.
2. Exfoliate weekly
A salicylic acid scalp treatment or a soft silicone massager lifts flakes and product build-up.
3. Hydrate dry scalps
Lightweight scalp serums with glycerin, niacinamide or hyaluronic acid soothe tightness.
4. Protect from sun
Parting lines burn easily — use a hat or scalp SPF mist in summer.
Concerns
Dandruff vs dry scalp: how to tell the difference
Dandruff
Greasy yellow flakes and itch are caused by yeast. Use a shampoo with ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione or selenium sulfide twice a week, left on for 5 minutes.
Dry scalp
Small white flakes and tightness, often worse in winter and with hard water. Use gentler shampoo and a hydrating serum.
Oily scalp
Wash more often with a clarifying shampoo and avoid heavy oils at the roots.
Build-up
Dry shampoo and styling products clog follicles; clarify once a week.
Help
When to see a GP
See a GP or dermatologist for thick scaly plaques (possible psoriasis), sudden hair shedding, patchy hair loss, painful bumps or an itch that won't settle with medicated shampoo.
