Mixing

Don't mix (in the same step)

Retinol + AHA/BHA

Too irritating together; use on alternate nights.

Retinol + benzoyl peroxide

Can deactivate some retinoids; separate morning and night.

Several exfoliants

Choose one acid per routine to protect your barrier.

Vitamin C + strong acids

Can sting; use vitamin C in the morning, acids at night.

Common questions

How do I read an ingredient list?

Ingredients appear in descending order of concentration down to 1%; the first five make up most of the formula.

Are natural ingredients safer?

Not always — essential oils and plant extracts can irritate. Safety depends on the ingredient and dose.

How many actives should I use?

Two or three well-chosen actives are plenty for most routines.
