Causes

What causes back acne?

Oil and dead skin

The back has many oil glands; clogged follicles become spots.

Sweat and friction

Tight gym kit, backpack straps and sweat left on skin make it worse.

Hair products

Conditioner and oils rinse down your back and can clog pores.

Hormones

Hormonal changes often trigger body breakouts alongside facial acne.

Routine

How to get rid of back acne

1. Use an acne body wash

Look for 2% salicylic acid or 4–5% benzoyl peroxide. Leave it on for 1–2 minutes before rinsing. Benzoyl peroxide can bleach towels.

2. Wash your back last

Rinse conditioner first, then cleanse your back so residue doesn't clog pores.

3. Shower after exercise

Change out of sweaty kit as soon as possible.

4. Moisturise lightly

Use an oil-free lotion so skin doesn't overcompensate.

5. Fade marks

Niacinamide or azelaic acid helps with dark marks left behind.

Help

When to see a GP

See a GP if spots are deep, painful, leave scars or don't improve after 8–12 weeks. Prescription treatments such as topical retinoids or antibiotics work well for stubborn back acne.

Common questions

What is the best body wash for back acne in the UK?

Look for 2% salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide body washes, available at Boots and Superdrug.

How long does back acne take to clear?

Most people see improvement in 4–8 weeks of consistent use.

Can my conditioner cause back acne?

Yes. Rinse hair first and wash your back afterwards.

Should I scrub back acne?

No, harsh scrubbing irritates spots. Chemical exfoliants are gentler.
